I dont see anything wrong with it, but my husband insists that you should only pay for those things with a regular credit card. Why or why not?Is it true that you are not supposed to pay for rental cars and hotels with your bank card for security?
A credit card is a MUST for a traveler.
For your car you get free insurance for your car. That means you do not have to pay the car rental insurance.
For travel, if your plane crashes your family gets 100,000 in insurance.
If things go wrong, ex: you don't get the car you wanted, or a trip gets canceled the credit card will refund you. It's called protection.
Debit card offers you absolutely no benefits. Not to mention, car rental places will not accept debit cards. In case you wreck the car, or take it out for an entire month, they want to be able to charge your card. Also if you do not use credit card, you will have to put a $500 to 1,000 deposit. Is it true that you are not supposed to pay for rental cars and hotels with your bank card for security?
if you use a Debit card (which is attached to your checking account
at a hotel or Rental car agency they will usually put a hold on the account like for say $200 or more dollars this Freezes the account
which now if have any checks that might come in during that time
will bounce and other transactions will be declined..(meaning if you went to restaurant and use the same card it will declined at the restaurant due to the freeze
(and once you pay your bill the freeze will eventually fall after you leave
or return the car but it takes a few days for it to fall off
Bank of America CHECK CARDS, some credit unions and some small independent (3-7 branch) bank check cards come with rewards programs including cash back, airline points, etc. I have one and it DOES include rental coverage, as does my regular auto insurance.
Two problems with checking account cards...
1. Linked to limited funds that are in your account.
2. Preauthorization charges at the pump...you know, swipe that check card at the pump and most banks will place a hold of $75 to $100 on your account. You pump $30 and your checking account has $50 in it. You shuld have a balance of $20, right? WRONG! You just got hit with a $30 NSF charge because the bank sees that $100 hold as a true debit!
Hotels %26amp; Check Cards...They now have access to your checking account number. Doing a chargeback (disputing a charge that's on your account with your bank) is easier with a Credit Card than it is with a debit or check card. The Hotel %26amp; Rental Car Companies will also attempt to place a hold for a certain amounts on your account. My checking account bank does not allow this type of transaction and only allows a hold of a dollar to verify that the card is a working card and not a clone or fradulent card.
Bottom line, I have never had a problem using a check card, but because of the issue outline above you may feel better and get more piece of mind by using a credit card.
Personaly, I do agree that for travel outside of my home state, I would use a Credit Card versus a Check Card.
To easy for the recipient to keep accessing your account with multiple debits. Much easier to contest a payment with the credit company on your side. Hubby is right. Give him credit for being brilliant just this once.
