Rent a crew cab pick-up, or an SUV with a hitch. No company will allow you to put a hitch on a rental car. A trailer tow vehicle needs a transmission cooler installed. There is no longer a temporary hitch like a bumper hitch available. What rental car places have cars with hitches or will allow you to attach a hitch?
Yes that would be the best. But where? Please advice if you can. I called all rental companies except for U-Haul... I don't want to rely on their bad reputation during my 1000 mile move.

You can always rent a hitch after you rent your car if all else fails. Hertz, U-haul, etc.
If you only need to tow something on a temporary basis, U-Haul rents and installs hitches. They also sell them but are a bit overpriced. Most larger auto parts stores can help such as Pep Boys. Hitches are always an option, unless you buy a used vehicle that already has one on it, it is a separate available add on to any new vehicle that meets the weight requirements.
Most trailer hitches are custom made. No car rental company would want the extra burden of pulling a trailer on one of their cars. However, you can rent a small U-HAUL truck that can accomodate trailer hitches. Remember too, a trailer must have a standard electrial connection that enables the running lights, turn signals, and brake lights to function at the same time as the towing vehicle's. There may be some restrictions on the use of a U-HAUL truck with regard to age, and Class of Driver's License.
u-haul will let u put a hitch on all those trucks they got, not sure about rentals on regular cars or not, maybe they dont want their cars under heavy use, or their insurance wont cover it. ask them why not and see what they tell you.
