I was wondering this because I wanted to rent a car but was afraid that I'd have to pay for the extra cost of insurance that the car's under. I have Mercury as an insurance and want it to use as my insurance instead of paying. Thanks... ^_^ vAre there rental cars that can be covered by personal car insurance?
If you don't have a non-owned vehicle rider on your policy, it won't cover a rental. You buy a policy to cover one car, not however many as you may borrow or rent.
Unless you have a basic policy, your liability may cover you, but not collision or comprehensive. Call your insurance agent to find out if you can buy what is called a vacationer's policy, which is a short term non-owned vehicle policy, to cover a rental vehicle. As an insurance broker I sold hundreds, maybe thousands of those, I never counted. Are there rental cars that can be covered by personal car insurance?
Call your Mercury agent to see if your coverages (collision and comp) would transfer to a rental. If so, you won't need to purchase the insurance from the rental company. If you are in an accident with the rental, the rental agency would charge you the deductible, and you would file a claim on your policy for the remainder of the damage.
In the USA, your vehicle insurance should extend to a rental. Also, the credit card you use to pay for the rental may provide CDW (Collision damage waiver) insurance. You should, however call your agent to make sure of the coverage that will transfer. Also call your credit card company to check on what they may provide.
I think most insurance plans cover rental cars. A lot of rental car companies try to sell their own insurance but in most cases, your personal car insurance policy will cover a rental car. Check with your insurance agent to make sure.
