And is it a high probability that regular-grade fuel was put in the car at some point in the past despite this? How do rental car agencies make sure that customers put premium fuel into their cars that require it?
There is no easy way to check but there are very few non turbo or supercharged cars that actually require premium. Premium may be recommended but it's not required and the cars will run just fine on regular. I doubt that you could find a car that ';must'; have premium at any of the usual rental agencies. You would have to go to those that specialize in exotic cars. I suspect that anyone willing to spend $500 to several thousand a day for a rental won't skimp on gas.How do rental car agencies make sure that customers put premium fuel into their cars that require it?
Theoretically this will actually cost you money since you will require more energy of the fuel you put in it and the computer would compensate by squirting more fuel in. Most vehicles will turn their check engine light on telling you something is wrong because most will start to ping, no worries the computer adjust to this as well but if you filled the tank with regular simply disconnected the battery for about 30 min before yo take it back, and as soon as you get there shut it off. The computer will require at least another two starting to verify that something is wrong by that time you have been released of your contract. Or you could save your self the trouble by simply putting the correct gas. Rule of thumb here is that if you want to rent an expensive vehicle you should have the pocket to do it. If the rental company where the idiots that gave you a vehicle that requires premium without you requesting such vehicle, than is their problem not yours.
good question, there really is no way to monitor it as most cars which ';require'; premium, such as a mustang cobra, will still run fine on regular.
Good luck!
